Services usually do not need your twitter credentials unless they involve retrieving your DMs or changing your profile information etc. which needs authentication. Even @Replies can be obtained without the need of your credentials.
Disclose your twitter username and password only to sites you trust! Have a background check on the app creator. Its usually helpful.
